Logan brace but Kettles boiling at penalty award
A DOUBLE by Logan Smith helped Riverside Tayport to a 3-0 win over Broughty United in the DDYFA U/17 Dave Pullar League.
Riverside were playing into a gale-force wind in the first half and chances were at a premium as the half ended goalless.
However, a couple of minutes after the break, left-side midfieldler Smith grabbed the opener when he lashed the ball home from 20 yards following a free-kick.
River were on top but were raging when Broughty were awarded a penalty. Keeper Bailey McGregor was up to the task, however, pulling off a magnificent save to keep his side in front.
River took full advantage of the reprieve and doubled their advantage when Smith latched onto a clearance out wide and fired the ball into the net.
Forward Matthew McIntosh put the icing on the cake when he knocked home goal No 3 late on.
The result moved Riverside Tayport into the top half of the table and boss Dean Kettles has been pleased, if a little frustrated, with the way things are progressing.
He said: “They had the wind in the first half but we started well and had a couple of chances inside the first 25 minutes.
“We started the second half on top and got the goal but they got a penalty, which I though was a bit soft. However, Bailey made a great save.
“But we got another couple of goals which I think we deserved and it was a good win – the whole team did well.
“This season has been a bit up and down. We had a hard start but we competed well and managed a few wins.
“Just before Christmas we were playing well but then had a few suspensions and lost our way a bit.
“We’ve lost to teams who I would say weren’t as good as Broughty.”
River are on league duty again on Sunday when they face Dundee Thistle.
“We beat them 3-0 the last time we played,” added Kettles.
