Confirmed cases across Tayside have risen to 47 people

THE number of confirmed coronaviru­s cases across Tayside is now 47, an increase of 13 since yesterday, while in Fife there are 19 confirmed cases.

Nicola Sturgeon said yesterday f our more people had died from Covid-19 i n Scotland, bringing the total number of fatalities north of the border to 14.

She also announced confirmed cases of Covid-19 i n Scotland were now at 499, up by 83 from the day before.

Dr Catherine Calderwood, chief medical of f i c er f or Scotland, said: “Those 14 deaths probably each represent up to 1,000 people that have become infected.

“We have 23 people currently in our intensive care units across Scotland who have coronaviru­s and each of them represents perhaps 400 to 500 other people that will have become infected in the course of their illness.”

Ms Sturgeon also advised people to adhere to t he selfisolat­ion measures in place.

She said “the vast majority of people” were making every effort to limit contact, but that “too many” were still being expected by their employers to go to work.

She called on shops which do not provide essential services to close, and urged pubs and restaurant­s which have stayed open to “do the right thing”.

She said: “If our NHS is overwhelme­d, people will die needlessly and avoidably. This is about saving lives.”
