- BY AMY HALL

NURSES at Perth Royal Infirmary have bee n “gobsm ac ked” by the nu mber of donat ions t hey have received th rough the Tele’s Essentials Boxes campaign.

The acute admissions ward at PRI is just one of many to have received gifts from local individuals and companies through the campaign, in which boxes filled with toiletries and home comforts are provided to patients and staff.

Senior charge nurse on the ward, Claire Shearer, who has been a nurse at PRI for 24 years, said: “All the wards at Perth Royal Infirmary have received lots of gifts from loads of companies, too many to mention.

“We have received stuff for patients such as pyjamas and toiletries for which we are very grateful and also a lot of things for the staff which we all appreciate.

“Patients can have things brought in for them which can be left at the door but it is difficult for a lot of relatives to get in at this time.

“Patients aren’t generally having things brought in because of the no visiting rule, so having these items delivered is fantastic.”

The campaign involves businesses and residents donating essential items to be parcelled up and sent to those who need it most within the NHS.

The packages can contain a range of toiletries such as shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste and deodorants, as well as face and hand creams for staff working shifts at hospitals and care centres across the region.

Ms Shearer added: “It has been great for the patients to receive these boxes. A prime example is a lady on one of our wards who brought nothing with her – it was lovely to be able to give her some fresh pyjamas and face wipes.

“We obviously always have stock of supplies but they are basic things so these products give them a few home comforts.

“We don’t usually receive donations and we don’t expect it so we have been gobsmacked at the deluge of stuff.

“We have had takeaways and things which has been a bit mindblowing to be honest. It absolutely lifts our spirits and you can see faces light up when we get things.”
