Warning of thunder after days of high temperatures
A S D u ndon ia ns were sunning themselves in parks and on beaches, foreca ste rs w a r ned thunderstorms could be on the way this weekend.
The Met Office has issued a weather warning for thunderstorms across Dundee, Perthshire, Angus and Fife.
Forecasters have issued a yellow warning, which is in place from noon t oday until 9am tomorrow.
They also warned there could be flooding and disruption in some areas.
Becky Mitchell, meteorologist at the Met Office, said the hot weather will clear – making way for “torrential downpours” mainly affecting the area this afternoon.
“For the Tayside and Fife areas the heavy downpours are expected to arrive early to mid-afternoon on Friday, with possibly two inches of rain falling in just one hour,” she said.
“We don’t have averages as such for measuring rain but 30-50mm in an hour is going to be quite intense, torrential rain with the risk of flash flooding.
“Unfortunately, that will not be the last of the wet weather in the area.
“We expect to see unsettled weather continuing as we enter the weekend and showers throughout Saturday and Sunday.”
Becky added: “Particularly on Friday there will be frequent thunder and lightning.
“There is also a risk of a few thunderstorms over the weekend so Friday is not the only day but it is looking the most likely day we will have storms.
“It has been quite a hot few days for the whole of the UK but these thunderstorms are going to cover most of the country so there is a very similar picture everywhere.”
Forecasters say there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.
Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.
There is also a warning that spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.
