Drunk mum kicked officer in the groin

- BY CIARAN SHANKS

A DRUNK mum kicked a police officer in the groin outside a nightclub after becoming enraged that her daughter was being filmed.

Sarah Watt, 46, saw red after tempers flared outside Rewind on Seagate last November.

Police had been called to deal with a disturbance in the club, involving Watt’s daughter, who has since died.

Watt became enraged after a member of the public started filming the incident on their mobile phone and she was restrained by police.

Prosecutor Christine Allan told Dundee Sheriff Court: “A witness walking past at the time had no knowledge of those involved but began filming on his mobile phone in case it was needed by police as future evidence.

“This was witnessed by the accused who was angry that her daughter was being filmed.

“The accused’s behaviour caused officers to restrain her. However, once her arms were seized the accused forcibly kicked the officer in the groin.”

Watt was cautioned and charged by police just before 1am.

She replied: “Shouldn’t have been filming,” before adding that she was sorry for her actions.

Watt, of Happyhillock Road, did not appear in the dock when the case called for an intermediate diet.

Solicitor Anika Jethwa said Watt was guilty of assaulting PC David Cowie by kicking him on the body.

The Crown accepted Watt’s plea of not guilty to assaulting the member of the public who was filming the incident.

Ms Jethwa said unemployed Watt had been on a night out with her daughter and had consumed too much alcohol.

She added that following the incident, her daughter had since died.

Addressing Sheriff Alastair Carmichael, Ms Jethwa said: “Alcohol had been taken and there was a gentleman filming her daughter who was shouting.

“She took umbrage to this, police arrested her and your lordship has heard what happened. She has always accepted responsibility from the beginning.

“This case was continued without plea on multiple occasions because I was made aware that her daughter had passed away. She was very upset about that but I was eventually able to take instructions.”

Sentence was deferred until September by Sheriff Carmichael for reports to be obtained.
