Divers join search for missing man

- BY LINDSEY HAMILTON

POLICE divers joined the search for a man who is feared to have drowned in the River Tay.

The bid to find the man has continued after he was seen falling into the water on Sunday evening.

The incident took place at the Tay Road Bridge, heading seawards towards Broughty Ferry.

At the time the Tele went to press, no sighting of the man had been confirmed, despite the extensive search led by Police Scotland.

Officers, along with coastguard crews and the RNLI, received the report of a man falling into the river at around 5.15pm on Sunday.

Broughty Ferry’s inshore and all-weather lifeboats, as well as coastguard crews from Dundee, St Andrews and South Queensferry, raced to the scene.

A helicopter from Inverness was deployed to assist in the search and police were also in attendance.

Several boats could be seen scouring the Tay on Sunday evening but the search was called off at 8.50pm.

The search resumed yesterday with police confirming that divers had taken over.

HM Coastguard and Broughty Ferry lifeboat crew said they were not involved in the latest hunt.

One witness said: “When I was in Broughty Ferry on Sunday I could see loads of police vehicles and other emergency vehicles parked outside the lifeboat station. There seemed to be a lot of activity.

“Someone told me that a man had gone into the water off the road bridge and that everyone was looking for him.

“Then I read in the papers that they were out searching yesterday.

“It seems the search was continuing on Monday.

“I really hope he is found or that he got to safety some other way.”
