Flames rip through scrap metal yard

- BY SARAH WILLIAMSON

WITNESSES have described seeing “huge clouds of black smoke” billowing as flames engulfed a Fife scrap metal yard yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the Cupar Trading Estate mid morning as Aberhill Metals, a scrap metal yard, went up in flames.

There were no reports of any injuries during the incident, which shocked passers-by and those working close by.

One witness said: “I was leaving the house when I noticed huge clouds of black smoke.

“As we drove past Cupar Trading Estate my seven-year-old son saw flames coming from the roof of a building. At this point traffic was being turned away from the estate and they were evacuating the area.

“We could see the fire was at local business Aberhill Metals.

“We were told afterwards that nearby vets were asking for folk to collect their pets.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 10.23am to reports of a fire within a building at Cupar Trading Estate.

“Operations Control mobilised nine fire appliances, two height vehicles and a number of specialist resources to the scene, where firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

“No injuries have been reported and all surrounding buildings were evacuated.

“Crews remained in attendance for some time.”

A spokeswoman for the police said: “Police attended following the report of a fire at Cupar Trading Estate.

“The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were in attendance and a number of premises in the area evacuated as a precaution.

“There were no injuries.”
