Delighted to welcome shipmates back on board city’s maritime museum

-

AFTER four months of closure Discovery Point and RRS Discovery has reopened and welcomed its first visitors.

The tourist attraction has lain empty since March. A spokesman for RRS Discovery said: “Four months to the day after having to close to the public, we were excited to be able to once again welcome visitors on board the world famous polar research vessel RRS Discovery.

“A visit allows people the chance to follow in the footsteps of Captain Scott and Ernest Shackleton as they explore the decks of this incredible 119-yearold ship.

“A one-way system will ensure visitors can enjoy their trip in safety, while break out spaces will allow people to pass in comfort should anyone wish to spend longer in any one area, soaking up the atmosphere of a ship that has visited Antarctica on three scientific expeditions.” Five-year-old Dominic Halford-Forbes, his mum Emma and dad Jamie were the first visitors to the ship following upgrades to the facilities including the brand new Hut Point takeaway cafe, selling tea, coffee and cakes as well as locally sourced homemade snacks.

Alongside RRS Discovery, which is open MondaySaturday from 10am to 4.30pm and on Sundays from 11am, many other attraction around the city have also reopened, including Verdant Works. The V&A is also planning its comeback with the design museum opening on August 27 with the long-awaited Mary Quant exhibition.
