Group has gone ‘above and beyond’ for community

-

A COMMUNITY group has gone “above and beyond” to provide much-needed services for the people of Maryfield and Stobswell.

Summing up the past year, the Boomerang group said volunteers had worked hard to look after all age groups in the community.

A spokesman said: “It’s been a funny old year at Boomerang.

“We’ve gone from 750plus faces coming through the door every week, from toddlers to the seniors at the lunch club – people of all ages – to virtually no one.

“It was very frustrating and soul-destroying at times but also very rewarding to see the staff diversify and share the vision of making Boomerang into a true community organisation where everyone who enters goes away having their needs met.

“The current restrictions have meant we have had to radically alter the way we normally work and change into being even more people-orientated and addressing the specific needs of our community.”

The spokesman said Boomerang has been closed to the public since March 23 but has provided food and related assistance to those in need in Stobswell through the creation of a community larder.

“We have also prepared and delivered meals to some of the most vulnerable members of our community across Maryfield,” he said.

“The meals are delivered cold and just need decanted on to a plate and microwaved to heat up. Funding was received for this project and in light of the current situation we can see this continuing for many months to come.

“More than 6,000 meals have now been prepared and delivered since the start of the pandemic.”

The group also provided afternoon teas, kids’ holiday activities and youth projects as well as providing toys, goodies and presents to all ages in the community at Christmas.

The spokesman said: “We are now looking forward to getting back to some kind of normality in 2021.”
