Letter writers prove my point

-

I RECENTLY wrote to the Evening Telegraph on the subject of driving and put my views across suggesting that a law making 10 year retesting with health and eyesight checks compulsory was well overdue.

Since then there have been letters written to this newspaper proving my point of view.

Confused wrote asking who had the right of way on slip roads approaching the Kingsway.

It shouldn’t be as the reader says “a long standing argument” it’s fact – and it’s written down in the Highway Code.

Firstly, regarding lanes and road markings: It’s keep to the left when following the road ahead unless road markings and/or signs tell you otherwise.

And on slip roads and roundabouts: Approach with the intention of keeping moving but ready to give way and stop.

To those who don’t know proper road procedures – and before you or somebody else becomes a statistic – read the Highway Code or take a driving refresher course.

And to all those safe law abiding drivers out there, keep up the good work.

KS n CONFUSED asked who has the right of way on slip roads approaching the Kingsway?

Traffic on the Kingsway has priority. The basic rule for emerging is only pull out if you are sure it is safe and you will not inconvenience other drivers in doing so.

The easy way to do that is use the slip road/ acceleration lane to adjust your speed so it matches the traffic in lane one of the dual carriageway rather than the approach tentative drivers seem to adopt which is to brake on approach which can make it much more difficult/dangerous to join the carriageway safely.

Of course, if the traffic is too heavy to join safely you have to stop and wait for a safe gap to do so.
