Six months in jail for serial offender

- BY CIARAN SHANKS

A WOMAN who lashed out at shop staff and stole a purse during a crime spree across Dundee has been jailed.

Michelle Garvie committed offences between March 2 and March 11 at shops and addresses in the city.

The serial offender attracted the attention of residents in Dryburgh Gardens after she was seen looking through spyholes between March 2-3.

Two days later, Garvie pushed a staff member at Home Bargains, The Stack, on the body.

She then made her way to The Range where she struck an employee on the body after being challenged about her suspicious behaviour.

Garvie admitted stealing a purse from an address on Tullideph Street on March 6. Dundee Sheriff Court was told how the resident heard someone enter her flat before realising the purse was missing.

On the same day, Garvie returned to Home Bargains and stole £81 worth of toiletries, clothing and household items.

The 41-year-old also pleaded guilty to stealing a bank card from an address on Blackness Road on March 11.

Garvie appeared from custody to plead guilty to seven charges.

Defence solicitor Anika Jethwa said Garvie has struggled with drug addiction and was encountering difficulties with her temporary flat in Ancrum Court.

She told Sheriff Alastair Carmichael: “She appreciates she’s in a difficult position today.

“She lost her long-term partner and found that extremely difficult to cope with. She’s anxious to get the case dealt with today.”

Sheriff Carmichael jailed Garvie for six months.

He said: “I think you know that with your record and this number of offences that I do not have any option here but to impose a custodial sentence.”
