Game was won, so Jimmy gave Fives crowd and Butch their wish
popular participant at the Fives and had a lot of the crowd wishing him on to score a goal.
“When our side were up around 4-0 against his team, I couldn’t resist the temptation to give him a bit of a hand.
“So, when one of our team passed the ball to me, I noticed Butch further up the park just waiting for the chance of a goal. I decided to give him a helping hand and committed probably the ultimate football sin . . . I deliberately kicked the ball to the opposition player (Butch) who then went on to storm the goal and score!
“It felt as if the ground erupted – everyone was so happy that Butch had scored a goal.
“Of course, Butch celebrated in grand style and the crowd enjoyed it along with him.”
Get in touch if you have any memories of Butch?
What was his full name, and which teams did he play for?
n SOME football stories are legend. The following, I’m assured, is true:
Can you imagine
Rangers or Celtic, or Manchester United or Manchester City playing in a cup final against their own reserve team?
Well that’s what happened in 1980 when Real Madrid played against their own B team in the Copa Del Rey Final.
Madrid’s first team won 6-1 in the match staged, obviously, at The Bernabeu.
It was the 78th final of the King’s Cup, Spain’s premier football competition, Real Madrid beating their own reserve team – who go under the name Castilla – 6–1.
Juanito and Santillana had Real 2-0 up at the break, before Andres Sabido and Vicente del Bosque added a third and a fourth either side of the hour mark.
Castilla’s Ricardo Alvarez reduced the deficit with 10 minutes remaining, but, almost immediately, substitute Francisco Garcia Hernandez made it 5–1 before a last-minute Juanito penalty sealed off a 6–1 triumph.
In a show of unity after the final whistle, both teams celebrated with the trophy.
