Monifieth Tayside also on London trip

-

TOM McMillan’s story on December 11 featured his youth team’s trip to London to play football and take in an England v Scotland game.

It brought a response from a former team-mate of mine, who had a slightly different take on the matter.

Jimmy Myles said: “I read

Tom McMillan’s story and I was also on this trip.

“It was a joint trip with Monifieth Tayside and we actually went by bus, stopping off on our way down many times so the men could get a pint and the boys a bag of chips.

“The football games we played in England were actually against Arsenal

Boys and Leicester.

“Other players of note on the trip were Mel Holden and Ian Stein.

“Our Monifieth manager at the time was the great Laurie Spence.

“The international game against England was a Friday night encounter and Scotland lost 4-1. I think Colin Stein scored for Scotland.

“I hope my memory is right as it’s 52 years ago.”

In the international game at Wembley Stadium, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters both hit double for the winners, with Colin Stein netting the Scots’ only counter.

Scotland lined up – Jim Herriot; Tommy Gemmell, Eddie McCreadie; Billy Bremner (captain), Billy McNeill, John Greig; Willie Henderson, Bobby Murdoch, Colin Stein, Alan Gilzean (Willie Wallace), Eddie Gray.

England – Gordon Banks; Keith Newton, Terry Cooper; Alan Mullery, Brian Labone, Bobby Moore (captain); Francis Lee, Alan Ball, Bobby Charlton, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters.

Jimmy and I teamed up in the Juniors at Broughty Athletic, and he was also well known for his time at Lochee Harp.
