Street left blocked as bus’s back end ‘beached’ on slope

- BY MATTEO BELL

PART of a Dundee street was left blocked after a bus got stuck for two hours.

The Johnsons coach was travelling from Dunmore Drive on to Perth Road when its back end became “beached” on the slope.

According to onlookers, the bus remained stuck for about two hours before it was freed and parked at the side of the road.

Police were called to the scene and were directing traffic around the vehicle.

A local coach operator was eventually called to take Johnsons customers on their scheduled trip.

One nearby resident said: “It was here for most of the morning.

“It must have been there from about 9.30am to 11.30am. The traffic wasn’t too bad but the police were called down. They were sort of guiding the traffic around it.”

Julian Scott, a motorist who passed the coach, said: “(The driver) beached the rear end on the steep hill behind him and got completely stuck, wheels spinning in mid air. “Most of the road was blocked.” A police spokesperson added: “It was reported to us around 10.30am and officers attended to assist with traffic management.

“The road was cleared by 11.45am.” Birmingham-based Johnsons is a specialist coach hire firm which organises holidays, day trips and bus services across the UK and Europe.

A spokesperson for the company asked the Tele to extend the company’s apologies to the public.

“This was a most unfortunate event, for ourselves, our passengers and Dundee road users,” they said.

“The coach was stuck for about two hours and we had to hire a local coach operator to take our customers on their excursion.

“We operate holidays all over Britain and Europe and thankfully incidences of this nature are very rare indeed.

“Please pass on our apologies to local residents who will have been inconvenienced by this occurrence.”
