Byrne backs kids

- BY NEIL HENDERSON AND GEORGE CRAN

DUNDEE have endured the darkest of seasons.

But Shaun Byrne believes the future is bright at Dens Park thanks to the club’s talented crop of youngsters.

Relegation to the Championship comes at a financial cost.

However, Byrne feels the Dark Blues’ next generation will shine in the second tier, thanks to their top flight experience.

“The future of the club is boys like Josh Mulligan, Max Anderson, Fin Robertson and Lyall Cameron,” he said.

“They might get a big chance next season.

“As one of the older players, it will be good to help them along.

“The future is good with the quality of young players we have.

“They will be looking to really push on next year.”

Mulligan and Anderson have stood out this season, despite Dundee’s struggles.

That came as no surprise to Byrne.

He said: “Josh is really powerful, strong and quick. Max has been outstanding this season for a young player.

“He really held his own in the Premiership and he’s got a big future ahead of him.

“They are both really good but there’s also other young boys who will be looking to kick on next year and get into the team.”

Anderson, in particular, has a head start on his fellow youngsters after racking up 41 appearances last season.

That, says Byrne, will be a huge help for him.

“It’s only going to be a positive,” the midfielder said.

“Max played in almost all the games, playing at Parkhead and Ibrox against really top players.

“That will stand him in good stead and I’m sure he’ll want a bit more of that in the future as well.”

Dundee have narrowed their manager search to five candidates.

Tele Sport revealed the Dark Blues were prepared to be patient in their search for Mark McGhee’s successor earlier this week.

They were in the process of compiling a shortlist.

Now, the club has confirmed it consists of five names.

Interviews will take place over the next week as managing director John Nelms and technical director Gordon Strachan search for the man to take the club forward.

Dundee’s statement read: “The club can i ssue the following update on the managerial position.

“Since the end of the season, we have entered into a thorough process in our search for the right person for the post.

“A shortlist has been established consisting of five candidates.

“The i nterview process is under way and the first round of interviews will be completed early next week.

“We would like to thank supporters for their patience on this matter.”

Despite being an early favourite with bookmakers, Celtic coach Gavin Strachan, son of Gordon, is not being considered.

Among the other names linked are former St Mirren, Sunderland and Hibs boss Jack Ross, who almost took the job in 2017, and former Dees Kevin Thomson and Darren O’Dea.
