Addict jailed for murder attempt

A DUNDEE construction worker who tried to murder a man in Charleston has been locked up for more than six years.

Drug addict Dale Munro, of Yeaman’s Lane, attempted to murder Alistair Montague on February 4 2020.

Munro, 35, was convicted by jurors of attacking Mr Montague in Dunholm Terrace, striking him repeatedly on the head with a knife or similar implement.

Mr Montague lost consciousness and suffered severe injury, permanent disfigurement and injury to the point his life was in danger.

Munro appeared by video link at Dundee High Court yesterday for sentencing.

Judge Gillian Wade QC sentenced Munro to six and a half years behind bars.

She told him: “This offence was clearly carried out against the background of a serious drug problem.

“The injuries which were suffered by the victim in this case were horrific.

“There were numerous wounds to the head and the back.

“You are very fortunate that Mr Montague managed to survive what was clearly a very violent attack.

“I clearly see no alternative.” In mitigation, solicitor James Stephenson said: “He’s been visited by family who are still supportive.

“He accepts that he will be sentenced to a custodial sentence.

“He has a fairly limited record. He does not have convictions for violence.

“Mr Munro accepts responsibility of the injuries caused and he regrets his involvement and the level of violence that happened on that date.

“He has recognised that he needs to deal with certain aspects of his life.

“He has a severe drug problem. He now knows that he needs to address that.

“He has started the process.

“He’s receiving an opiate substitute in custody.

“This was not a planned attack.” Mr Stephenson said Munro hopes to return to working in the construction industry when he is released.

Munro’s sentence was backdated to April 1 when he was first remanded.
