Peter hijacks my ‘first on pitch’ claim

-

PETER Yeaman disputed my claim to have been “first on the pitch at Muirton Park” when Dundee clinched the league title in 1962.

You see, Peter is adamant – because he claims it was him!

He said: “Thoroughly enjoyed your article about being first on the pitch at Muirton Park in 1962.

“However, I am afraid I have to tell you that you might have been first on the park after the final whistle, but I had already invaded about 20 minutes earlier after the third goal.

“I came from behind Pat Liney’s goal and got about five yards on before two of Perth’s finest constables unceremoniously threw me back into the crowd.

“As it’s probably one of my finest football memories, I hope you don’t mind me claiming the glory!”

CONTINUING to highlight local players joining senior clubs back in the day...

Looking through the archives, it was reported on October 16 1973 – under the headline ‘Dundee Sign Local Youngster’ – that “Dundee have added another youngster to their staff. He is 16-year-old Dundonian James Bannon, centre-forward of Hillside Boys Club.

“Arbroath made him an offer this week, but he plumped for Dens Park.

“He guested recently with Liverpool for a week and Dundee United also showed interest.”

Then, up came a cutting from just under two years on (August 15 1975), which read: “Forfar manager Jerry Kerr has signed 18-year-old Dundee centre Jim Bannon.

“He is expected to make his debut against Brechin City at Station Park this weekend.

“An electrician, Jim (recent photo, left) was called up by Dundee at the beginning of last season.

“He was a part-timer at Dens.”
