Probe as pupils shot with BB gun pellets

- BY JAMES SIMPSON

THREE pupils were hit with pellets from a BB gun during an “alarming” incident at a Dundee school.

Police were called to Baldragon Academy after reports that youngsters had been shot at on Thursday.

One source claims the school was put in “lockdown” during the incident.

It is not clear whether the pupils were targeted inside or outside the school building on Harestane Road.

No one was injured, but Councillor Kevin Keenan, who represents the Strathmartine ward, says the incident could have been much more serious.

He said: “While it has been labelled a toy, if it’s got to the stage that the police are investigating it, those who were struck certainly felt it.

“My concern would be that, while this may have been deemed a prank, this could have caused permanent injury.

“It is certainly a worrying and alarming incident that someone has been irresponsible enough to bring that to school and fire it.

“I would urge parents just to warn their kids about taking any such items to school.”

A police spokeswoman added: “At around 1.20pm on Thursday, a report was made to police that three pupils from a school on

Harestane Road, Dundee, had been struck by small plastic pellets from a plastic toy BB-type gun.

“No injuries were sustained and inquiries are continuing.”

A Dundee City Council spokesman said: “Police Scotland were called by the school. It would not be appropriate to comment further due to the involvement of police.”

According to the Scottish Government, certain types of BB gun do not fall under air weapon licensing, if they discharge lowenergy plastic pellets.

However, police may be able to investigate the incident for other offences like assault.
