Tributes to former Tannadice and Scotland star Wilson, 85

FORMER Rangers, Dundee United and Scotland winger Davie Wilson has died at the age of 85.

After making his debut for his boyhood club against Dundee in 1957, Wilson made 373 appearance­s for the Gers between 1957 and 1967, scoring a total of 158 goals.

He also won 22 caps for Scotland, scoring 10 goals for his country. He enjoyed three wins for his country over England, including scoring in the 1962 2-0 success at Hampden Park.

His family announced in August last year that Wilson had stopped attending matches at Ibrox due to “ongoing Alzheimer’s and dementia issues”.

The Dundee United Twitter feed commented: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of our 2017 Hall of Fame inductee Davie Wilson. Davie made over 150 appearance­s for United, scoring 27 times. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

Rangers said: “Rangers Football Club are today extremely saddened to hear of the passing of former player Davie Wilson at the age of 85.

“The thoughts of the directors, staff and players of Rangers are today with the family and friends of Davie.”

A classy left winger, he loved playing for his boyhood heroes and was said to “have loved Rangers with every breath”.

Wilson won 11 domestic trophies during his career at Ibrox and was also part of the team that reached the

European Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1961 against Fiorentina. After leaving Rangers in 1967 at the age of 28, Wilson was transferre­d to Dundee United with team-mates Jimmy Millar and Wilson Wood.

He went on to make more than 150 appearance­s for the Tannadice club, before finishing his playing career at Dumbarton, helping them to win promotion to the First Division in 1972.

Wilson was a three-time Hall of Fame inductee with Rangers, Dundee United and Scotland after contributi­ng great achievemen­ts and success for each.

He went on to become manager of Dumbarton, whom he led into the Scottish Premier League in 1984, and also had a spell at Queen of the South.
