Back-up keepers are key
MANY people questioned the wisdom of Ally McCoist signing goalie Lee Robinson this season.
In fact, there were eyebrows raised when he re-signed Steve Simonsen in the summer.
Why, some folk asked, is Ally bringing in not one but two senior professionals just to act as back-up for Cammy Bell?
The Gers gaffer’s argument was that he needed experienced players in case one or both of his keepers got injured.
He got a bit of stick about it – but he has been proven correct now that both Bell and Simonsen are crocked.
The Englishman did very well in the League Cup match against St Johnstone on Tuesday night before getting stretchered off.
His save from Brian Graham, the block that resulted in him getting injured on the post, was especially good.
Lee didn’t have an awful lot to do when he took over from his team-mate, but he helped the side keep a clean sheet and win the game.
But he is not a kid. He is 28 and has been at a fair few clubs in his career and was a penalty-kick hero when Queen of the South beat Partick Thistle to win the Ramsdens Cup two seasons ago.
He will certainly be able to cope if he starts against Dumbarton in the William Hill Scottish Cup clash tomorrow.
