DANCE schools from across Glasgow have got an extra spring in their step after coming out top at the UDO Worlds Street Dancing Championships.

Street Feet dance studio, from Clydebank, and DejaVu dance crew, from Kilsyth, defeated competition from across the world to take home the top prizes.

Dancers from Street Feet managed to secure two world championship titles, a second place in under eight duo and fourth place in the under 16 duo.

Mylie Murray, 7, from Drumchapel, who won the under-eight world champion title, upset the odds to beat competitors after being too shy to participate in class this time last year.

DejaVu dance crew, who previously appeared on Britain’s Got Talent, took home first place in the under 18s novice category, with another two crews securing first place, two second places and a third place spot.

Street Feet founder April StuartMacRae said she was still in shock at her school’s success.

“I can’t believe it. I’m just wee April from Glasgow and my kids are just from normal families and to beat competitors from around the world is unbelievable.”

April, who originally found fame as a member of pop band Sweet Injection, decided to open the school after returning from a tour in China two years ago.

She said: “I came home from touring and decided I wanted to give something back to kids of Glasgow. I’ve already experienced everything, I’ve seen the world, and I wanted them to be able to do the same.”

The 23-year-old originally rented out a local community hall but was forced to move to a bigger space in Clydebank shopping centre when her classes became over subscribed.

“I have nearly 100 students now and I’ve got singing teachers, drama teachers, ballet teachers,

“The studio is open five days a week so they can come in whenever they want. I’d rather they had a safe environment like the school than hanging around the streets.”

The UDO World Street Dancing Championships brings together dance crews from Europe, China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada and the US to battle it out against competitors from Scotland and the rest of the UK for the prestigious title of World Street Dance Champions.

UDO is the world’s biggest Street Dance Organisation with over 60,000 registered members across the world and they host 30 events worldwide every year.
