A NEW breast check app will launch today at Central Station after research revealed that two thirds of women in Glasgow are not regularly checking for cancer.

Research commissioned by Breast Cancer Now showed 66 per cent of women are not regularly checking, with the main reason given as forgetfulness.

Commuters at Central train station are being given cards containing information on the new app. Adverts will also be on screens across the station from today until October 11.

The app, free for both Apple and Android devices, will encourage women to set up a checking plan that fits around their lifestyle.

Andrena Bain, 48, from Glasgow, was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2013 after she found the lump through checking.

She said: “I remember the sonographer taking my hand and asking if anyone was with me before she broke the news that she was fairly certain that I had breast cancer.

“Although there was no genetic link with my tumour, my mum had breast cancer so I’ve always regularly checked my breasts.

“Not every lump is cancer but you need to look out for changes to your body.

“I’m here because I checked myself and because my mum’s cancer made me more breast aware.

“It doesn’t matter where or when you check your breasts, just do it. You can even use the new Breast Check Now app to remind yourself.”

Breast Cancer Now’s Director for Scotland Mary Allison said:

“Checking your breasts regularly could save your life. The earlier you find breast cancer the greater the likelihood of a better outcome. “The message is out there.

“The biggest challenge is that many women still have not developed a habit of regular checking.”
