Residents fed up after latest school fire
GOVAN residents have said they are fed up after a local derelict primary school was targeted by vandals.
Six fire engines were called to a blaze at the derelict Drumoyne primary school on Wednesday which left major roads in the town closed for several hours during rush hour.
Residents have said that the property is a constant source of trouble with break-ins and fires happening on a regular basis.
Alistair Sinclair, of Drumoyne community council, said: “Despite the building being sold some time ago – the new owner has done nothing to the old building – and no planning application has been submitted.
“At the DCC meeting last week the concern was voiced regarding the fact that it was falling into dereliction and appeared to have little or no security against fire/ vandalism.”
The B-listed building is in the process of being sold to a developer who wishes to convert the property into a hotel.
It is owned by Glasgow City Council but City Property act as agents on their behalf with regard to the marketing and disposal of the property.
Govan Councillor Stephen Dornan added: “All we can do until the building is bought is make sure that security is keeping an eye on the it and police can maybe add a few more patrols.
“There’s quite a few houses around the area but the kids don’t give a second thought for what could happen. And they could get trapped in the school and end up hurting themselves.”
A spokesman for City Property said: “At present the entire site is fenced off with both the building windows and doors secured to prevent access. It appears there was a forced entry on Wednesday and we have now re-secured this point of entry.”
