Glasgow fugitive ‘hiding’ in Spain
A GLASGOW fugitive is among 10 most wanted criminals believed to be hiding in Spain, police have said.
Jonathan Kelly, 36, who was released from Low Moss Prison, went on the run in August 2014 when he failed to meet police and social work staff.
Kelly is wanted for a string of violent crimes i ncluding a machete attack that left his victim paralysed.
Police believe his criminal associates may be helping him hide in Spain.
Kelly, who uses a number of aliases including Donald Cameron, John Kerr, and Jonathan Donnelly, has spent most of his life in jail. He was free for less than three weeks before going on the run.
The Evening Times understands he will be returned to prison for at least a decade, if he is eventually caught.
A source said: “Kelly has a long stretch ahead of him if the police ever catch up with him.
“Maybe that is the reason he ran: one wrong move and he knew he would be back behind bars for 10 years.”
Crimestoppers has also offered up a £1000 reward for information leading to the cap- ture of the fugitive, who has not been seen since September 10 2014.
British and Spanish police released the list at a joint conference in Malaga.
Jamie Acourt, 40, from southeast London, was one of the suspects in the investigation into the racist murder of 18-year-old Stephen Lawerence, Shane O’Brien, 28, accused of knifing a 21-yearold to death and Sarah Panitzke, 42, who laundered £1bn in a tax scam are also on the list.
Steve Reynolds, head of International Operations for the National Crime Agency, said: “The fugitives we are hunting are wanted for serious crimes and must be returned to the UK to face justice.
“We need the support of the public to help us catch them.
“Be our eyes and ears and tell us if you have any information on the whereabouts of our targets.”
Chairman of Crimestoppers Lord Ashcroft said: “These people have managed to evade arrest and avoid justice.
“We know that with the help of Spanish authorities, along with the public in Spain and the UK, we can find these people.”
