Another quiet week in the world of pop...

- Michelle McManus

IT’S been high drama in the pop world this week, kicking off with the news that Irish band The Script are considering taking legal action against controversial X Factor winner James Arthur and by controversial I mean, let’s not even mention that infamous rap battle a few years back with some chap named Micky Worthless.

It is alleged that if you play James Arthur’s latest single Say You Won’t Let Go, which is currently at Number 1 in the UK, simultaneously with The Script’s song The Man Who Can’t Be Move it sounds similar.

In the past few years there have been huge high profile copyright lawsuits in the music industry that I’ve spoken about before in this column.

It reminds me of the case of everyone’s favourite fictional priests Father Ted and Father Dougal, who ripped off Nin Huguen and the Huguenotes’ Norwegian Eurosong B-side to create that all time classic My Lovely Horse.

To be fair though, Father Ted could have been forgiven for thinking they’d get away with it as apparently the entire band had died in a plane crash years earlier, including all the record company staff and everyone involved in the copyright.

Another band under fire this week was girl group Little Mix who coincidentally are also being accused of copying someone else’s music, not to mention the backlash the girls received due to their risky costume choices on Sunday night’s X Factor.

I didn’t see it, but according to my Twitter feed some viewers found it all too much and had to be revived with smelling salts after viewing their performance.

One lovely story did, however, come out of the pop world this week, which really made me smile. Global superstar Adele is currently touring the world and at the finale of her Nashville concert on Tuesday night the singer was given a romantic surprise by her boyfriend.

To celebrate their fifth anniversary, Adele’s partner Simon Konecki wrote love notes on pieces of pink confetti that showered the stage in place of the usual white confetti printed with lyrics from her songs. They said things like happy anniversary and you’re an angel and other beautiful messages to his partner and mother of his child.

I thought it was so sweet and what’s more just really lovely to hear happy news for a change as all we ever seem to read is doom and gloom when it comes to couples in the public eye.

Yes, thank goodness for Adele in what’s been a rather sombre week in the music industry with all the “you clearly stole my song” accusations that’s been flying about. Well, at least no-one can ever accuse current X Factor contestant Honey G of copying anyone. Oh no, that one there is completely brand new.

I’M really excited to announce that I’ll be performing for Children in Need this year at the Pudsey Goes To The Musicals event at the City Halls in Glasgow on Tuesday, November 15.

Everyone’s cuddly friend Pudsey Bear will be getting on his top hat and tails for an evening of songs from the shows with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Presented by Jamie MacDougall, special guests on the evening will include myself, West End star Scott Davies, RCS Musical Theatre Group and a star appearance by the Inverkip Primary School Choir who, let’s face it, are surely odds on to steal the entire show.

With songs from Phantom of the Opera to Brigadoon make sure you join us for a memorable evening of songs from the shows all in aid of Children in Need.

Also, don’t forget to come dressed as your favourite musicals character and make sure you are in fine voice to sing along with us.
