A THIEF who could not work out how to get out of first gear led a slow-speed chase in a flatbed truck, authorities in Alabama said.

Jefferson County chief deputy Randy Christian said the 16-mile chase never topped 30mph. It ended when the transmission seized, stopping the truck.

Authorities said 29-year-old Randy Dewayne Vert faces multiple charges, including attempting to elude and resisting arrest.
