TAV SIGNS NEW DEAL AND TARGETS TITLES

- By SCOTT MULLEN

JAMES Tavernier has targeted silverware and Champions League football after committing his future to Rangers.

SportTimes revealed on Tuesday that the right-back was poised to put pen to paper on a new Ibrox deal. Tavernier has now signed on the dotted line for another threeand-a-half years and he is determined to write his name in the Light Blues’ history books.

He said: “I was in [kitman] Jimmy [Bell]’s kit room and we were having a little bit of a joke and you obviously see all the pictures he’s got of all the squad with the trophies.

“That’s what I want to be doing at Rangers – I want to be winning trophies, I want to be winning leagues and that’s why I came here.

“I want to write the next chapter at the club.

“The squad that we’ve got, I’m really excited about. We’ve got good numbers in

the squad, we’ve got great quality in the squad and the performances lately have been good.

“I’m really excited for the second half of this season and the seasons to come. I want to win the league. If we can go for the Treble I want to win the Treble.

“I want to aim high and be playing in the Champions League, so this club has got the capability to do that. It’s got the fans behind us all the way, it’s down to the players to push really hard to get to that point.”

Tavernier has been a key player for Rangers once again this term and was handed the armband for the Scottish Cup win over Ayr United on Sunday.

The 26-year-old made the move to Glasgow from Wigan Athletic and is de- lighted to have pledged his future to Graeme Murty’s side. Tavernier told RangersTV: “Signing this new contract would have to be my best moment at the club so far and knowing I will be here for another three and a half years.

“It is something I have really worked hard for, it is something I really want to do and I want to win these trophies that I keep on talking about. It is something I’ll be working hard to achieve.

“I’m so comfortable living in Glasgow and my family are, and it’s a great feeling to walk out into Ibrox on a match day with all the fans behind you singing.

“It’s a place I’ve not wanted to leave. I love being here and I love wearing the shirt. I just want to win stuff now.”
