Tributes as Doddy dies at 90

-

TRIBUTES have been paid to British comedy legend Sir Ken Dodd, who has died at the age of 90.

The comic was a favourite with Glasgow audiences over more than 60 years, making his final performance at the Pavilion Theatre on July 1 last year during what would become his final tour.

Sir Ken joked that Scots referred to him as “Hamish McTickle” as he entertained with his famous one-liners. He first appeared in Glasgow at the Empire in 1954, which he said was known amongst fellow comics as the ‘House of Terror’.

The much-loved star died on Sunday in the home where he was born, in the Liverpool suburb of Knotty Ash. His wife was at his bedside. The Liverpool funnyman left hospital on February 27 at the end of a six-week stay for a chest infection.

He wed Anne Jones, his partner of 40 years, on Friday and an announcement was due to go out later this week about the marriage.

His publicist Robert Holmes said: “To my mind, he was one of the last music hall greats.

“There is no-one else that comes close.”

He added: “With Ken gone, the lights have been turned out in the world of variety.”
