Boydy blasts Gers defending

- By CHRIS JACK

KRIS BOYD has blasted the “criminal” defending from Rangers that allowed Odsonne Edouard to clinch an Old Firm win for Celtic.

Goals from Josh Windass and Daniel Candeias twice gave Graeme Murty’s side the lead at Ibrox.

But Edouard netted his first derby goal with 20 minutes of an end-to-end encounter remaining to secure all three points for the visitors.

Boyd said: “From a Rangers point of view, you have got to show him down the line, you can’t let him back inside.

“Even going down the line, if he cuts it back you have still got defenders there. As soon as you show him inside, it opens the full goal up.

“It is a fantastic finish but as soon as you let him in there, it is criminal defending.”

Rangers spurned a glorious chance in the closing stages as Alfredo Morelos hit the post after Scott Bain had saved from Windass.

The Colombian has scored 17 goals this term but couldn’t find the net for the first time against Celtic.

Boyd said: “I think even before that, before the Edouard goal, he had a chance when he broke through as well.

“For me, I think Morelos is a striker for whom it is instincts. When he has got time, he can take touch, touch, touch.

“He overthinks it rather than just getting it away. You can see there is a hesitation before he strikes the ball. He has scored a lot of goals but it could be a lot, lot more.”

Rangers are now nine points adrift of Celtic in the Premiership after Murty suffered his first Old Firm defeat.

The Ibrox boss admitted it was an opportunity missed and Boyd said: “I don’t think Rangers played that badly. They created chances but they ran out of ideas once Celtic went down to 10 men and were trying to play down the sides when it wasn’t on.

“The balls from the wide areas weren’t great so in the final third you will be disappointed.

“But Rangers created more than enough chances to win that game of football.

“They haven’t and it is disappointing and the disappointing run against Celtic continues.”
