Shipbuilding giant hopes to revive plans for car park
SHIPBUILDING giant BAE Systems is pushing forward with plans for a permanent 239- bay car park in an area of Glasgow undergoing massive regeneration.
The c ompany had started construction on the new spaces before 2016 but stopped work due to financial restrictions. It has now re- applied for planning permission. It comes at the same time as city bosses are drawing up a masterplan to turn Govan into a “destination of choice” through the transformation of Water Row.
A planning statement by architect Neil Holdsworth said: “The new planning application seeks full permission for 239 car parking spaces and their permanent and continued use as a car park previously granted on a temporary basis which has now elapsed.”
The transformation of Water Row could begin next year after developers laid out plans to turn Govan into a “destination of choice”.
Glasgow City Council, Central Govan Action Plan and Govan Housing Association are hoping to build up to 230 new homes in the area, with new shops and business units as well as outdoor public spaces.
The idea is to open up the area, with three of the options seeking to make use of the proposed bridge link from Govan to Partick, currently being developed through ugh the City Deal.
