Clarky confident his Frew side can avoid the drop at first attempt

- BY JIM O’DONNELL

THEIR opening results make a strong case for saying the six newly promoted Premiership clubs are out of their depth.

Just one victory has been chalked up in 12 contests up to now ( Cambuslang Rangers running out 4- 0 winners over Rob Roy last weekend) and Wednesday night’s round of league fixtures brought only draws eked out by Troon and Largs Thistle.

A potential shot in the arm is in the offing tomorrow with only the aforementioned Cambuslang not playing at home. However, making that advantage tell is going to be a lot easier said than done according to Colin Clark, whose Renfrew side are hosting Kilbirnie Ladeside.

Clarky has come out fighting, insisting his players should have more than the one point to their name earned in last Saturday’s 2- 2 draw with Pollok.

He said: “The level we are playing at now has a very fine margin between success and failure so it’s paramount that you put away your chances.

“We didn’t do it against Pollok and though I’d have bitten your hand off for a share of the spoils before, at full- time I was disappointed.

“And we then lost out on Wednesday night 2- 1 away to Kilwinning Rangers when the only mistake my players made was to stand off their substitute Carlo Monti in the closing stages – and you just cannot do that against someone of his quality.

“It was a sore one to take because my players put so much into the game and deserved better than a defeat.

“The upside is the guys will never be accused of lacking effort and have shown they are not in the least bit intimidated by these big- name clubs and players so it’s pleasing to know we can go out there and compete with the very best.

“I cannot speak for the other promoted clubs but if they have similar hard luck stories to tell from their opening couple of games.”

Renfrew newcomer Rikky McIntosh ( ex- Shettleston) scored in the Abbey Park defeat and has looked impressive up to now, as has Richard Henry ( Yoker Athletic) and former Beith duo Jamie Camp b el l a nd Dav id McKen n a . I n ju r y h a s prevented Clarky from unveiling close- season additions Bob Campbell ( Shettleston) and Ryan Borr is ( Hurlfotrd United).
