Carney to stay on as Bank governor through Brexit

-

BANK of England Governor Mark Carney has agreed to continue in his post until the end of January 2020, Chancellor Philip Hammond told the Commons.

Mr Hammond said: “I have been discussing with the Governor his ability to be able to serve a little longer in order to ensure continuity through what could be quite a turbulent period for our economy in the early summer of 2019.

“The Governor has agreed, despite various personal pressures, that he will continue until the end of January 2020.”

Asked about Mr Hammond’s remarks that Brexit could bring turbulence to the UK economy, Prime Minister Theresa May said a smooth transition was being worked towards.
