Hibs poised to snap up Wright

- ALAN TEMPLE

HIBERNIAN are hopeful of concluding a deal for winger Drey Wright in the next 24 hours.

The former St Johnstone winger has been training with the capital club since they reported for pre-season on June 22.

Wright is expected to pen a two-year deal with the Hibees and become Jack Ross’ first summer signing.

The 25-year-old is a free agent after rejecting the Perth Saints’ offer of a new contract in May and will provide additional width for the Easter Road outfit, easing the burden on Martin Boyle and Daryl Horgan.

Wright the switch to St Johnstone from Colchester in the summer of 2018 and scored one goal in 45 appearances for the Perth side.

Although occasionally electrifying, Wright’s progress was hampered by injury.

He required knee surgery after suffering cruciate ligament damage six months into his first season at McDiarmid Park. His arrival comes while Hibs seek to implement cost-cutting measures on their existing squad, with discussions ongoing regarding wage cuts in addition to the salary deferrals agreed in April.

However, the financial restraints are balanced against the practical need to build a competitive squad for next term and they remain interested in former Hamilton midfielder Alex Gogic, who is a free agent after his Accies deal expired.
