Cash ‘blessing’ for LGBT boxers

- BY HAMISH MORRISON

LOTTERY funding is a “blessing” for an LGBT-friendly boxing gym in the West End.

Dr Louisa Campbell, the owner of the Edge Gym in Broomhill, said that the funding would allow the gym’s gay-friendly Legit Boxing Team to access equipment and said the group was committed to tearing down cost-barriers preventing people from getting involved.

She said: “The Legit Team epitomises us bursting that stereotypical bubble and making sure all people can participate in boxing.”

Louisa told how the gym was in the process of constructing an outdoor training area for boxers.

Easterhouse Football Academy is also among nine groups which will share in a cash boost from a partnership between the National Lottery and sportscotland.

Forbes Dunlop, chief operating officer at sportscotland, said: “This funding will make a huge difference to clubs and communities the length and breadth of the country. The grants will help improve sporting opportunities as part of Scotland’s world-class sporting system for all.”

The groups aim to encourage people facing discrimination into sport.
