Buyacar Buying Guide: Alpine A110

It’s one of the great modern sports cars – and Buyacar can make buying one easy

-

YOU HAVE TO ADMIRE THE SUITS HIGH UP within the Renault Group. Over the years they’ve given the go-ahead to so many projects that other mainstream car manufacturers wouldn’t touch with a ten-foot baguette. What other company would green-light a supermini with a V6 engine sitting over the rear axle? Or a glassy coupe on the platform of an MPV? Or, as we’ve seen in the last few years, a £70k hatchback?

The Alpine A110 is undoubtedly from the same rather unusual mould. There’s no easy way of making a mid-engined, two-seater sports car, unless like Porsche or Lotus you’re already set up to do so and have a willing queue of buyers loyal to a storied name. Renault, though, had to resurrect the Alpine brand and hope enough people remembered 1960s rallying and 1970s Le Mans racing to splash out on a brand new Cayman rival with the engine from a Mégane.

Just as well they got it right then, isn’t it? The A110 matches beautiful styling (inspired by classic A110s, but not a slave to retro design) with an engaging, free-revving drivetrain and the masterful use of light weight for a chassis that treads softly over rough roads yet digs in and goes once you reach a corner. That it finished second in ecoty 2018 – to none other than Mclaren’s incredible 600LT, and ahead of a 911 GT2 RS – shows how highly we rate it.

Some will baulk at the prospect of paying over £50,000 for an A110 when a Cayman is similar money. We’d tell those people that it’s worth it purely for the way the car drives. Those people should consider how well A110s are holding their value, too: this is a relatively rare machine, meaning only a few are on the used market at any given time.

We found a 2021 example on Buyacar in mid-range Légende trim and with just 2900 miles on the clock. With a handful of options, including Abyss Blue paint and heated seats, its £53,480 price represents a useful saving over the new price. Alternatively, it could be yours for just £695 per month, which includes a £300 Buyacar contribution, a 6.9% APR and all the usual Buyacar benefits such as an agreed delivery date, an HPI check and a 14-day money-back guarantee.

A quick, safe and painless purchase – and so much fun thereafter. What’s not to like?
