Mercedes-benz C63 AMG Estate

Winter downtime has seen maintenance plans drawn up

- Sam Jenkins (@evosamj)

THE C63 HASN’T SEEN MUCH ACTION of late. As capable as it proved to be last winter, any opportunity to avoid road grime is one I’m happy to take advantage of, and besides, using our MX-5 instead is hardly a hardship. My urge to drive the AMG is as strong as ever, though, so I’ve still given it a good run on those occasions when the roads have been dry.

Before a summer of driving and another trip to the Nürburgring, R55 AWP will receive some preventative maintenance. Alongside the usual service, a new timing belt, tensioner and pulleys will also be fitted. The rubber and bearings are failure points given enough time and these parts don’t cost much to refresh, hopefully eliminating the risk of a pricey failure.

For further peace of mind, I have also sourced a new set of injectors to be fitted at the same time. Injectors on AMG’S M156 V8 have been known to stick open given enough use, flooding a cylinder and, in the worst-case scenario, turning the block into little more than an Amg-branded coffee table. Again, parts and labour are relatively cheap, so are worth the outlay on this engine at around the 60,000-mile mark.

On the few drives I have enjoyed in the C63 in recent weeks, its newfound traction has continued to amaze me. A heavy right foot will still bonfire the rear tyres with little effort, but the combination of the Quaife differential, Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tyres and Suspension Secrets geometry tweaks have continued to deliver even in poor conditions. Even so, the summer still can’t come soon enough…
