Evo

Supercar slayer

-

I have to congratulate you on your feature with the Mitsubishi Evo VI and Subaru Impreza RB5 (issue 319). It certainly stirred up some memories for me as I was fortunate enough to own a black, year-2000 Evo VI GSR back in the day. I sold my Calibra Turbo to facilitate the purchase after test driving the car – I had to have one!

Adam Towler summed up perfectly how this thing drove. Back then the handling was sublime – certainly compared to the Calibra – as was the performance. It was described at the time by Autocar as being a ‘supercar slayer’, which brings me to one of my many memories with this wonderful car.

I was returning to my home in Barnsley from Sheffield, driving the Evo along a very long, quick stretch of A-road, when I saw a red Ferrari 360 in my mirror. It soon came past me at speed and very, very close to my car. So, I followed the 360, pushed on a bit, caught it up and actually passed it on a roundabout. I don’t think the driver was happy – a Mitsubishi dispatching his Ferrari in this manner was not in his script.

The drive continued with my Evo leading the way. Towards the end of the road the 360 finally pulled alongside me and the obligatory thumbs-up were exchanged before we parted ways.

What the 360 driver wasn’t aware of was that at the time I was a serving road traffic cop (now long retired) who regularly patrolled that road in Sierra Cosworths, 24V Senators and more. But on that particular day I was in my very special Mitsubishi, which certainly lived up to its supercar-slayer reputation. All within speed limits, of course…
