Porsche 911 Carrera (993)

Some winter miles have sparked a new sense of purpose for 2024

LAST YEAR SAW THE 993 RESIDING in my garage more than I’d care to admit. Being able to occasionally get my hands on some of the real gems we are fortunate enough to run on the Fast Fleet (2023’s M5 CS springs to mind) unfortunately means that the Porsche can sometimes get nudged down my priority list.

I made a concerted effort to put some miles on it over the festive season, however, and it was testament to Porsche’s engineering that it showed no issues after months of sitting idle.

Returning to the 993 also reminded me of some of its challenges, such as the leisurely warm-up of both its engine and cabin. In those moments I couldn’t help but acknowledge how accustomed I had become to the luxuries of modern cars, especially in colder temperatures. It’s funny how quickly you appreciate the benefits of a heated steering wheel when you’re shivering in a freezing interior, wishing you could feel your fingers.

Then there are the headlights, which are reminiscent of those of a classic Land Rover Defender. Compared to some modern LEDS it feels like you’re trying to light the road ahead with a couple of tea lights. Not fun, particularly during rainy nights. In fact, cold and/or wet conditions serve as a stern reminder that you need to be fully engaged when trying to get the most out of an older car like the 993. So much more depends on the driver doing their job well.

Partly because of this, and despite the quirks, my affection for this old Porsche remains undiminished. The joy it imparts with each drive is unparalleled. So a recent MOT that showed I added just 864 miles to the odometer over the last 12 months has served as a wake-up call.

The goal for 2024 is crystal clear – unleash the 993 and embark on more adventures in the UK and hopefully abroad. I would also love to somehow get a drive in an original 993 RS, just to see how different it feels from my Carrera after its numerous upgrades. It’s time to exchange those garage-dwelling moments for memories made on the open road.

Date acquired April 2016 Total mileage 91,074 Mileage this month 91 Costs this month £54 (MOT) mpg this month 28.1
