Snorkelling with brightly coloured fish on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, watching the sunset at Uluru and spotting crocodiles in Kakadu National Park are just some of the highlights of a trip Down Under. It’s such a vast country that it could take months or even years to see it properly. However, good domestic flights mean you can tick off some of the essential sights in just a matter of weeks. Every trip should start with two or three nights in Sydney, where you can take in the iconic Opera House, climb the Harbour Bridge and take a ferry to Manly Beach. Make the two-hour train journey to the magnificent Blue Mountains and lace up your hiking boots.

Then fly north to Queensland for a four-wheel drive tour on Fraser Island, go island-hopping in the Whitsundays and take at least one snorkelling trip to the Great Barrier Reef, where you will be awe-struck by the underwater world. Take another flight to Alice Springs in the Red Centre and climb Uluru. If you have time, combine this with a visit to Kakadu National Park with its wetlands, Aboriginal rock art and crocodiles.
