Built in 1799, in vibrant red and pink sandstone, Hawa Mahal
was inspired by Khetri Mahal in Jhunjhunu, now a ruin. Characterising the palace's honeycomb-like structure, the 953 latticed windows were designed to allow the ladies of the royal court to observe daily life without being seen; due to 'purdah', they could only appear in public with faces covered.
