SHOOTING FOR THE STARS
On January 28, 1986, Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds into its 10th mission, killing all seven crew members, including Ellison Onizuka. Also on board that day was a football signed by the players – including Onizuka’s daughter – from Clear Lake High School, Texas. To mark the disaster’s 31st anniversary, astronaut Shane Kimbrough took the ball, which had been recovered and returned to the school, with him on the International Space Station, leaving it to float in front of the window.
