In April, Coventry defender David Busst suffers a horrific leg-break in an accidental clash with Manchester United pair Denis Irwin and Brian Mcclair, causing keeper Peter Schmeichel to vomit at the sight. In hospital – where he has a total of 26 operations – Busst contracts MRSA and the infection becomes so serious there are fears he may lose his leg. He recovers, but never plays professionally again and retires seven months later. “A day doesn’t go by when I don’t think back to it,” he said. “Sometimes on holiday if people ask what I did, I say I had a shark bite.”
