FOLIAGE EXPLOSION

Strappy and sword-like leaves give this border a sense of dynamic energy

-

From the monster-size yucca to the low-growing euphorbia, everything explodes skyward in this dramatic composition. The contrast in texture between the feathery groundcover and taller, broader blades also plays an important role. The subtle colour scheme ranges from blue-green to bronze, adding another layer of intrigue. The finishing touch is the splash of bright yellow flowers from crocosmia ‘Solfaterre’, an eye-catching soft touch in this exciting jungly corner. Best for: full sun and moist but well-drained soil.

How the design grows:

Evergreen yucca adds a sculptural focal point in any garden, even in winter. Yet because the crocosmia and euphorbia are herbaceous perennials, it’s best to boost early season colour with some winter aconites (Eranthis hyemalis) to lend a sprinkling of buttercup-type yellow flowers in January. The foliage of these bulbs will die down by late spring and won’t detract from the main display. As the design matures, the euphorbia and crocosmia will multiply, bringing ever more colour to the scene.
