What’s wrong with my acer?

- JOY GOODERHAM, BY EMAIL

It looks as though the trunk has split and become infected. Tree bark can split because of extreme winter cold, periodic drought or accidental damage when gardening. Usually the bark closes up and heals itself naturally, but the weeping suggests a fungal infection. It may be difficult to remedy and is likely to affect the tree’s growth. It may be worth asking a local tree surgeon to come and have a look at it.
