Bolting beauties

My onions flowered. Will they still crop?

- DAVID RUSSELL, BY EMAIL

Onions have habit of ‘bolting’ or producing flower stems. It’s a common sight if the plants are subjected to drought or low temperatures. This year’s cold, dry April has been a major factor. Unfortunately, once a flower stem starts to grow, the bulbs fail to develop and won’t produce a useful crop.
