Why did my asparagus fail to crop this year?

- GEMMA RIGHT, HUNSTANTON, NORFOLK

Asparagus needs an open, sunny site and welldrained soil that’s not too acidic. Once all these conditions are met, other potential problems include slugs and snails getting to the spears before you do and the spears becoming damaged by windrock or frost. Harvesting crops before the plants are established can cause spears to emerge a bit spindly.
