Control pests

-

Thinning stems can increase air circulation around a plant and reduce the risk of mildew. Pests are also discouraged by better air flow. If a perennial has been infected by a disease or attacked by insects, pruning off the damaged foliage and removing it from the garden is often an effective way to prevent further problems.
