Long grass

A mini-jungle of grass stems offers many more hideaways than a manicured lawn. Added together they give wildlife a greater number of bedrooms, reducing their chances of being discovered.

Penthouse suite

Insect hotels, broken terracotta pots or stacks of tiles all provide dry, safe homes for ladybirds

and solitary bees.

Easy access

Groundwandering hedgehogs, frogs, toads and slow-worms have a tough time negotiating fences and walls. Just cut some gaps in the bottom of fences (no more than 13cm/5in square).
