Buy plugs from your garden centre in September and October to plant 20cm (8in) apart. They need good ground to power their rapid growth next spring, and don’t forget to net from pigeons.

PRESERVE YOUR HARVEST 2

Harvesting, cleaning, preparing and cooking takes a surprising amount of time. Make a day of it and invite friends round to help; you’ll have a laugh and get loads done.

TIDY STRAWBERRIES 3

Once they’ve finished fruiting, remove the straw mulch and clip back foliage to about 7.5cm (3in) above the crown. Mulch with well-rotted organic matter and save runners until well rooted.
