A helping hand

Q Can I help my apricot crop? JULIE CHAPMAN, SKEGNESS

-

A Apricot flowers open very early in spring when there are few pollinating insects about, so it’s worth hand pollinating plants with a small brush on a sunny day. They also tend to bloom on older wood, on short spurs, so don’t prune too hard. Just shorten long summer growth while your tree’s in leaf.
